Unspoken: The Identity of a Confessions Blog
Unspoken is an upcoming confessions blog built around anonymity and mystery. My job was to create a brand identity that captures that essence using minimalist design. In this blog post, I walk you through how I approached it. Let’s pe right in!
Research and Inspiration
I always start by looking around. A bit of research helps me break through creative blocks and sparks ideas. I explore what competitors are doing, not to copy, but to understand the norms. And then, I figure out how to break them. I want every client’s brand to be unique and memorable.
With Unspoken, I noticed a lot of sameness in the confessions blog space. That gave me a clear direction. I wanted a bold colour that grabs attention and a voice that feels intimate but impossible to ignore.
Design Decisions
By now, my head’s full of ideas. I write them down before opening any design software. But first, I ask myself a few key questions.
What colours evoke mystery and clarity? What typography feels modern but emotionally grounded? What kind of logo suits a brand built on secrets? What tone should the brand speak in?
These decisions shape everything. I take my time here because this is where the brand’s personality starts to form.
Concept Development
This is where things come to life. I begin with the logo because it sets the tone for everything else. For Unspoken, I chose a clean sans-serif font and turned the “O” into a subtle speech bubble with a keyhole inside. It’s a minimalist hybrid. It’s part wordmark, part icon.
Next, I curated typography that complements the logo. I paired another sans-serif font with a handwritten one to create contrast. It’s structured but personal.
For iconography, I designed custom flat icons that match Unspoken’s aesthetic. They’re simple, functional, and enhance the blog’s user experience.
I waited to add colour until the layout and typography felt right. Once they did, I introduced a bold purple, balanced with white and dark grey. Together, they evoke mystery, clarity, and seriousness. This is the emotional core of Unspoken.
Iteration and Refinement
Design isn’t done until it’s tested. I check scalability across screen sizes, soft-proof print assets for colour consistency, and upload designs to social platforms to see how they hold up after compression.
Once everything checks out, I present the concepts to the client. Feedback is part of the process. I refine the designs until they align with the client’s vision while staying true to the brand’s essence.
Wrapping It Up
This four-step process is how I build brand identities that resonate. Research, design decisions, concept development, and refinement all come together to create an impactful brand identity
For Unspoken, it meant creating a visual language that whispers secrets and invites trust. The result is a brand that stands apart without ever raising its voice.
