The Unspoken Rules of Logo Design: What You Need to Know

So you have some idea of what your business's logo should look like and what it represents. Maybe you want it bold and extravagant, or perhaps, elegant and minimalistic. But have you considered the non-visual side of things?

There's more to logo design than what meets the eye. Today, I want to explore these lesser-discussed aspects of logo design. Your copyrightability, scalability, legibility, and adaptability.

Let's dive into each of these aspects.

Copyrightability: Standing Out in a Crowd

When I design a logo, it's crucial to ensure it's unique and it doesn't infringe on existing trademarks. To achieve this, I aim for originality and I steer clear of clichés. I avoid using other designers' templates, and I avoid using resources I don't have rights to use.

I understand that my clients might want copyright ownership of their logos, therefore, I ensure I provide designs that can be copyrightable.

A distinctive logo will not only safeguard your brand, it also makes it more memorable. As far as copyrightability goes, copyright ownership protects your brand's identity and prevents others from using similar designs.

Scalability: Looking Good in Any Size

The following aspect I want us to explore is scalability. A well-designed logo should be scalable, meaning it should look great in various sizes and formats. Whether it's on a business card or a billboard, your logo should remain clear and recognisable.

To ensure scalability, I typically deliver logos in PNG, SVG, and PDF formats. These are formats that retain the quality of graphics so they still look good when resized or viewed in different contexts. Ultimately, this ensures your logo remains legible and visually appealing across different platforms.

Legibility: Making Your Mark

Additional to being scalable, a logo should be legible. Legibility is vital for a logo, this is especially true for a logo that includes text. Your logo's typography should be easy to read, even at small sizes.

To guarantee legibility in my logo designs, I avoid overly complex fonts and lettering that might be difficult to decipher. Furthermore, I make sure that text isn't obstructed by other elements.

A legible logo ensures your brand's message is conveyed clearly and effectively.

Adaptability: Fitting In and Standing Out

Last but no least, adaptability. A good logo should be adaptable to different formats and media. Consider how your logo will appear on various platforms, such as business cards, website headers, or social media profiles.

When I work on a logo design, I ensure it looks great in different colours, backgrounds, and resolutions. This helps maintain a consistent visual identity across various platforms.

A Logo That Goes Beyond Looks

By considering these often-overlooked aspects of logo design, you get a logo that not only looks great but also effectively represents your brand's identity and values. Furthermore, you get a logo that's copyrightable, scalable, legible, and adaptable.
